June is Pride Month. For many of us that translates into seeing companies slap rainbows onto their products, festivals that are full of sweaty bodies and booze, and parades where drag queens face off against two of their natural enemies– hate preachers and natural light.
In short, Pride Month comes with all of the elements of a great party: themed attire, alcohol, and flamboyant personalities. But Pride is about so much more. It's about celebrating queer visibility. It embraces the roots of the gay rights movement by demanding that we be seen and heard in a culture that oppresses queerness.
